THE FATE OF A NIGERIAN UNDERGRADUATE

The fate of a nigerian undergraduate was again called to question when ASUU began another show down with the federal government; the salary increment saga being the most contentious issues amongst others. Gaining admission into a nigerian university is an uphill task, this coupled with calendar instability and other factors, makes his journey through the university an arduous one.
The three-hour meeting between the Federal Government’s negotiating team and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was deadlock and both parties agreed to meet no more.
Speaking to Daily Trust on phone last night, National President of ASUU, Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie said that the meeting held made no progress, adding that “Contention is collective bargaining and signing the agreement.”
He said the Federal Government team led by Deacon Gamaliel Onosode has refused to sign an agreement collectively reached, stressing that another sore point was the issue of financial autonomy.
Awuzie said the government wants it to be signed at the level of individual councils, “and we have shown that the Autonomy Act does not confer financial autonomy and that no university in Nigeria can negotiate with the councils because none of them has the money to pay salaries in these universities.”
